How to Look Up a Doctor's NPI Number in Seconds

March 22, 2026

Whether you're a patient verifying a provider's identity, a billing specialist resolving a claim, or a researcher studying the healthcare workforce, looking up an NPI number takes just a few seconds with the right tools.

Search by Name

The fastest method is a name search. Head to the DoctorDataHub search page and type the provider's first and last name. The search engine uses full-text indexing across names, specialties, and locations, so partial matches work well. You can also filter results by state to narrow down a common name.

Browse by Specialty or Location

If you're not looking for a specific individual but rather a type of provider in a given area, browsing by specialty or state is often more useful. For example, you can browse all family medicine providers and filter to your state, or start from a state page and apply a specialty filter from there.

What to Do Once You Find the NPI

Each provider profile on DoctorDataHub shows their full NPI, entity type, primary taxonomy (specialty), credential, and practice address. This information comes directly from the NPPES — the government's official registry — so it reflects the provider's most recent self-reported data.

Keep in mind that the NPPES is a registration database, not a licensing or credentialing database. An NPI record confirms that a provider is registered, but it does not verify active licensure in a given state. For licensure verification, contact the relevant state medical board.
