How to Use DoctorDataHub to Research Healthcare Providers

October 1, 2026

DoctorDataHub is a free tool for searching and browsing the NPPES National Provider Identifier registry — the government's official database of over 8 million U.S. healthcare providers. Whether you're looking for a specific doctor or exploring a specialty in your area, here's how to get the most out of the site.

Searching by Name

The search page uses full-text search across provider names, NPIs, specialties, and locations. Type a provider's first or last name (or both) and use the optional state filter to narrow results. Partial matches work well — you don't need an exact name. The search returns both individual providers and organizations.

Browsing by Specialty

The specialty index lists all NUCC taxonomy categories with provider counts. Click any specialty to see a filterable list of all registered providers in that category. Use the name search and state filter within the specialty page to narrow to your area.

Browsing by State

The state index shows every U.S. state with provider counts. Each state page displays specialty pills — click a specialty pill to filter to that specialty within the state. This is often the fastest way to find, say, all dermatologists in Colorado.

Gender-Specific Browsing

The female provider hub and male provider hub give you gender-filtered views of the entire provider database. From each hub, you can drill into specific specialties or states, or cross both — for example, female OB/GYNs in New York. All gender data comes from NPPES individual provider records.

Understanding What You Find

Every provider profile on DoctorDataHub shows NPI, entity type, credential, primary taxonomy (specialty), and practice address — all sourced directly from NPPES. This is registration data, not licensure data. For active license verification, contact the relevant state medical board. The data sources page has details on data currency and sourcing.
